The BIG Birthday Weekend!

Here's a recap of the the Birthday weekend!
Friday

On Friday Cora rode for the first time in her big girl car seat. She loves being turned around, and we love all the extra "cheese faces" we get when we turn around to take a peek at her!

Saturday

On Saturday we got some things ready for Cora's 1st Birthday party. Beau and I went to Rochester in the morning to fill up the balloons we ordered. When we were walking back out to the van with a huge bouquet of balloons he said he'd better hold on to me so I don't float away! Getting out of our parking spot in the crowded TJ Maxx parking lot was a bit of a trick with the back end of full of balloons floating around! Note to self....next year get a pull through spot! After the kids got up from nap we tried some more walking practice with Cora. We've been fairly sure for awhile now that she could take off at any moment, but she just doesn't want anything to do with the whole walking thing. Well today she finally did it!!! She took those first wobbly steps walking between Luke and I. Sure we had to bribe her with fun stuff she wasn't supposed to have or food, but hey, she did it! As the night went on she got a little more confident and walked further distances on her own....although she still had to be going after something she wanted. Crawling is still her transportation mode of choice, and she's starting to wise up to our attempts at "tricking" her into walking, but she can do it and with a little more practice just maybe she'll realize that the whole walking thing isn't so bad!

Sunday

Sunday was the BIG day. Little Miss Cora Mae turned 1! I can't believe how fast the year has flown by!! Here's a flashback to where we were a year ago:

And here she is today:

She LOVED her cake, both digging in it AND eating it. Her presents on the other hand didn't hold much interest for her. It was all we could do to keep her interested long enough to get the paper off of the presents. Since we just finished Christmas and she go A LOT of toys, for her birthday we went with mostly clothes (along with some girly sippy cups...we can't expect her to use truck and dinosaur cups ALL the time right?). During the birthday prep I felt a little guilty that all she was getting was clothes, but guess what....turns out she LOVES clothes. She was as interested, if not more, in those than any of the toys. She's really into trying to put clothes on right now. Although she thinks everything goes on her legs like pants. As for the balloons that Beau and I picked up on Saturday....she wasn't too sure about them. She did warm up to holding one balloon at a time, but balloon bouquets were NOT her thing. All and all she had a great birthday...here's a little about Cora at 1 year:

*We're starting to hear the beginnings of a few more words, but her vocab is still pretty limited to "mama" "dada" and "Beau"
*While she isn't saying much she understands SO much. She really understands most of what is said to her. She stops abruptly stops when told no (sometimes only long enough to turn and give us the "cheese face" and go back to whatever she was doing), and listens when told to get down....we'll see how long the listening lasts
*She's a HAM and LOVES to make us laugh. In case anyone hasn't seen the "cheese face" it is what we've termed the face when she squints her eyes closed, wrinkles her nose, and gives us a big 'ol grin. It cracks us up every time, and consequently when we sternly tell her "no" she often retaliates with the cheese face.
*Pulling up and walking around things, along with her monkey crawl (scooting around on her butt) are her main forms of mobility. She will stand and can walk, but doesn't like to and it usually takes a bribe to get her to do it.
*She's eating all table food, and loves it. We really haven't come across anything that she really doesn't like or won't eat. She wasn't thrilled about broccoli the first time I gave it to her, but since has eaten it without complaint.
*Has a TEMPER...oh yes, the tantrums have started already!! She will cry, throw herself on the floor and roll back and forth while kicking her arms and legs.
*Loves waving bye bye and thinks she's really funny when she does it. When I lay her in her crib for nap or bed she always waves bye-bye to me.
*Has recently started pretending everything is a phone...especially the remote. She will hold it up to her ear and say "owe" and then hands it to me hoping I'll pretend to talk in to it too.
*Just shy of 20 pounds as of her doctor's appointment yesterday....21st percentile weight and 25th percentile height.
*Crawls into everything....toy bins, baskets, shelves, drawers...you name it
*Has her amazing little way of turning even the worst days around. A bad day doesn't seem quite so bad when she gives you that grin or lays her head on your shoulder for a hug. It's amazing how someone so little can put things into perspective...kids are great at reminding you of what really matters aren't they...
